Veteran's Day 2007

Dick and I spent the day-appropriately-at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. The drive across the Chesapeake was stunning. The skies were clear, light fall breeze, blue water and lots of sailboats out for a last perfect sailing day of the year. Annapolis was lovely also in it's fall colors. The leaves were just beginning to turn golden and red and a few fluttered to the ground. The view of the Naval Academy Chapel is at right. Dick and I were comfortable outdoors with business suits on.

We had a buffet brunch at the Naval Officers Club. We attended the brunch sponsored by The Maryland Branch of The Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims. We found out the requirements to join this society are a bit more lax than the Mayflower Society. Sons and Daughters of Pilgrims is open to anyone that can prove their ancestor came over in the 17th Century.

Our speaker was John Page Williams, Senior Naturalist for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. He spoke about the "Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail." If you ever get a chance to listen to his talk it is well worth your time. In 1608 Capt. John Smith came to the New World and put together his 30 foot 'discovery barge' (looked more like big row boat with a sail) and set off with twelve men to explore the Chesapeake Bay. What an adventure.

After the speaker we walked over to the Chapel at the Naval Academy for The 39th Annual Massing of the Colors. This is a ceremony that honors the Flag of the United States and those living and dead who have struggled to preserve it. Very beautiful ceremony.
